HISTORY OF ORIGINAL CEDARMONT FARM

In 1806, Littleberry Nolen, also called Berry, purchased a 185-acre tract of land along the west bank of Hayes Creek and north of the Big Harpeth River.  Nolen settled on this property and was active in politics serving as justice of the peace and court official.  The main block of house may have been constructed as early as 1816 but certainly by 1823 when his son-in-law Stephen Nolen purchased the property.

Stephen Nolen was a wealthy landowner at the time of his death in 1851, owning almost 600 acres.

The property passed to his son, William, who added a rear brick addition and a large portico on the main façade. These changes were made to reflect the Greek Revival Style of the period.

Cedarmont continued as a prosperous farm with William Nolen farming several hundred acres and possessing numerous slaves.  During the Civil War, the house was occupied many times by both Union and Confederate forces.

Cedarmont received its name from the row of cedars which line the driveway to the house.  An original log smokehouse with half-dovetail notching is located approximately seventy feet to the south of the main house.  To the north of the house is a 19th-century cemetery enclosed by a rock wall.

Cedarmont was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Today, the original home , secondary residence and 40 acres is owned by the Kelly Family and is used as a Wedding and Event Venue.  Click here for more info.
